  2.  * The covenant, Those who signed it. (1-31) Their engagement to
  3.  sacred rites. (32-39)

  5.  #1-31 Conversion is separating from the course and custom of
  6.  this world, devoting ourselves to the conduct directed by the
  7.  word of God. When we bind ourselves to do the commandments of
  8.  God, it is to do all his commandments, and to look to him as the
  9.  Lord, and our Lord.

  12.  #32-39 Having covenanted against the sins of which they had been
  13.  guilty, they obliged themselves to observe the duties they had
  14.  neglected. We must not only cease to do evil, but learn to do
  15.  well. Let not any people expect the blessing of God, unless they
  16.  keep up public worship. It is likely to go well with our houses,
  17.  when care is taken that the work of God's house goes on well.
  18.  When every one helps, and every one gives, though but little,
  19.  toward a good work, the whole will come to be a large sum. We
  20.  must do what we can in works of piety and charity; and whatever
  21.  state we are placed in, cheerfully perform our duty to God,
  22.  which will be the surest way to ease and liberty. As the
  23.  ordinances of God are the appointed means of support to our
  24.  souls, the believer will not grudge the expense; yet most people
  25.  leave their souls to starve.

  27.  * The distribution of the people.

  29.  - In all ages, men have preferred their own ease and advantage
  30.  to the public good. Even the professors of religion too commonly
  31.  seek their own, and not the things of Christ. Few have had such
  32.  attachment to holy things and holy places, as to renounce
  33.  pleasure for their sake. Yet surely, our souls should delight to
  34.  dwell where holy persons and opportunities of spiritual
  35.  improvement most abound. If we have not this love to the city of
  36.  our God, and to every thing that assists our communion with the
  37.  Saviour, how shall we be willing to depart hence; to be absent
  38.  from the body, that we may be present with the Lord? To the
  39.  carnal-minded, the perfect holiness of the New Jerusalem would
  40.  be still harder to bear than the holiness of God's church on
  41.  earth. Let us seek first the favour of God, and his glory; let
  42.  us study to be patient, contented, and useful in our several
  43.  stations, and wait, with cheerful hope, for admission into the
  44.  holy city of God.
